According to People, the photos (which you can see in full here, or on People’s Twitter post, below) from the episode, titled Chapter Fifty-Eight: In Memoriam, show the Riverdale crew — Archie (KJ Apa), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) — reuniting before starting their final year of high school. The images also include one of Archie hugging his mum, Mary (played by Molly Ringwald), who appears to be in tears.

The episode, as the title indicates, reportedly pays tribute to Archie’s dad in the show, Fred Andrews, who was played by the late actor Luke Perry. Perry tragically and suddenly passed away on March 4 this year — during the filming of season three of the show — after suffering a massive stroke at just 52 years of age.

Although season three of Riverdale didn’t address Perry’s death, season four reportedly does in the very first episode. “[The first episode is] going to reveal the fate of Fred Andrews and it’s set on July 4th. It’s a really emotional episode; it’s a tear-jerker. It honours the memory of Luke [and] it honours the memory of Fred. They were both such amazing human beings that we wanted to really, really craft an emotional and deep tribute to him, which is what I hope this episode is,” Riverdale’s creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Tonight back in July.

Aguirre-Sacasa explained to The Hollywood Reporter that they didn’t address Perry’s death in season three because it was so sudden and they wanted to handle it respectfully. “It was just devastating. And we wanted to honour Luke and figure out the best way to handle the character of Fred Andrews in the show… [we said] let’s not rush… and let’s tell that story at the beginning of season four.”

While we don’t have too many details for how the tribute and Fred’s storyline will play out in the episode, The Hollywood Reporter (THR) reported in July that Aguirre-Sacasa had recruited Perry’s longtime friend and former Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star, Shannen Doherty, to make a guest appearance on the episode. According to THR, Perry had been “advocating for Doherty to appear on Riverdale ‘since season one’” and including Doherty in the episode was a way to make the episode “as special as possible”.

Season four of Riverdale will be premiering in the US on the CW network in October and hopefully soon after here on Netflix in Australia. Check back here, we’ll update this story with an air date once it’s released.
