The cut of the season has been unveiled, and it’s a playful, somewhat softer take on the traditional mullet. Coined the step mullet, the trending style is one we’re betting you’re about to see a whole lot more of.

Hot off the heels of the mullet’s return, most recently spotted on and off the runway, and championed by the likes of both Rihanna and Zendaya, the step mullet is a daring cut that, depending on how you choose to style it, can look as avant-garde as you wish.

The trend is one that takes its inspiration from similar styles that first rose to fame in the early aughts, and per Teen Vogue, is best described as “hair cut at different, well-defined, tiers.” Picture the ‘do as “a bob and essentially a shorter bob as a substitute for bangs,” or alternatively, “three tiers: bangs, short bob, long bob.”

As seen on influencer Reese Blutstein and DJ Yulia, the cut resembles a freshly-cut fringe, sans blending, and when styled correctly, carries with it a certain degree of edge.

“I really think it comes from people who cut their own hair… kind of accident-based, DIY, just chopped your step with kitchen scissors,” Masami Hosono, the creative director at Vacancy Project, told Teen Vogue.

Per the publication, Hosono, who works at the gender-neutral New York-based salon that has perfected the cut, advises that, “straight hair is best to make [a] sharp line especially but curly hair is also cute.” When the hair is worn wavy, the cut takes on a softer, considerably more casual look.

If you’re considering a cut and looking to take your ‘do to a cool new level, then the step mullet may just be the style for you. But, before you take the plunge, Hosono stresses that the most important feature of this cut is “the balance between length/bangs/and steps.” So be sure to consult a professional before taking to your mane with a pair of scissors.
