MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Protesters were arrested Wednesday in Midtown Manhattan after unfurling a banner reading “return the children” in front of Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, protest organizers and witnesses said.
Activists from the group Rise and Resist — which has held several protests in and around Trump Tower — blocked off Fifth Avenue at the intersection of East 56th Street around 1:30 p.m., protest organizers said.
The protesters were demonstrating against President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration police at the country’s southern border and the practice of separating migrant children from their families.
“Imagine 42 school buses filled to capacity with innocent children ranging in ages from 3 to 17, who are lost and terrified. Now imagine your child on that bus,” Maryellen Novak of Rise and Resist said in a statement.
The activists who blocked of Fifth Avenue chanted “you take the children, we’ll take the streets” before they were arrested, according to video from the scene. Other protesters pushed empty strollers to represent the children of migrants who have been separated from their families and detained, according to protest organizers.
