“Clare’s [Waight Keller, creative director for Givenchy] idea was around this woman living in a grand house somewhere and she has this punk attitude,” explains Guido Palau, global creative director for Redken and the hairstylist for Givenchy’s couture show in Paris. “She mentioned Stella Tennant as the kind of woman it might be. That was the starting point.”
While some girls modelled simple “spikey chignons”, as Palau describes them, the standout style was the “sculptured bird-like shape” that fanned out at the back of the neck with a toughness tinged with old-school, aristo glamour.

For the punk chignons, Palau explains, “I blow-dried [the hair] into a low ponytail and then triple-taped it at the nape of the neck, giving it this spiky edge at the end with plenty of attitude. It was a return to the highly stylised Eighties way of working,” he continues nostalgically. “Right back to the way we used to do things when I first started out—that’s how I approached these lacquered, bird-like creations.”
“I remember growing up when girls wouldn’t get as elaborate as this [with their] hair, you know, but there was this feel to it, this attitude. They wore bangs and it had a sort of street look to it, but this was the couture version, with that extra precision.” Landing at the perfect precipice between anarchy and elegance.

Guido Palau’s step-by-step guide to Givenchy’s haute couture hair look:
- For a short cut, blow-dry smooth with Redken One United and clip hair down to flatten out any bulk.
- For the longer look, blow-dry using Redken Satinwear 04, keeping some areas flat and accentuating other areas by blowing upwards like a bird’s wings.
- For the dressed look, prep hair using Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame, create a clean centre parting and blow-dry smooth.
- Tie hair into a tight ponytail at the base of the neck and lightly spray through the lengths with Fashion Work 12 hairspray. Run through with straightening irons to give a sleek finish.
- Using a thin elastic, fold the hair up into the base leaving the ends out and bind. Finish the ends with a spray of Forceful 23 and ruffle with fingertips to create punky ends.
