SCSU Announces 2013-14 Wrestling Team Captains

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University wrestling team announced its captains for the 2013-14 campaign.

The captains for the 2013-14 season are senior Chris Brassell , senior Andy Pokorny, red-shirt junior Josh Howk and red-shirt sophomore Clint Poster.

Brassell posted a record of 16-10 at 197-pounds for the Huskies in 2012-13. He placed second at the Finn Grinaker Open and sixth in the Super Region 3 Championships this past season. In addition, he is a three-time NCAA DII All-Academic recipient.

Pokorny is a two-time NCAA DII All-American at 133-pounds. He charted a 24-3 record this last season on his way to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Birmingham, Ala. Also, he was crowned Super Region 3 Champion and received NSIC All-Conference first team honors.

Howk split time as a starter in the 149-pound weight class. He collected a 16-2 record and was 10-0 in dual meet action for the Huskies this past winter. In tournaments, he was third in the Finn Grinaker Open and second in the Holiday Inn/Husky Open.

Poster earned NCAA DII All-American honors this past season by placing fourth at 157-pounds. He went 35-5 on the season including 12 wins by fall. His 35 wins were the second most wins on the team for the Huskies. In addition, he was crowned Super Region 3 Champion and first team NSIC All-Conference. Poster was a 2013 NCAA DII All-Academic recipient for his efforts in the classroom.

“All four of these young men have earned the right to be called a captain,” said head coach Steve Costanzo. “Their peers have picked them for this role. They have been quality student-athletes for us on and off the mats and I am excited in the direction that they will take us in 2013-14.”

The Huskies ended their 2013-13 season with a perfect 21-0 record, which included a NWCA National Dual Championship, NSIC Conference Championship, Super Region 3 Championship and a Runner-Up finish at the NCAA DII Championships.

SCSU returns four NCAA DII All-Americans to the squad in 2013-14 and will be looking for their sixth consecutive top ten finish at the national championships in Cleveland, Ohio.

The grapplers return to the mats for their 2013-14 campaign on Friday, November 8 in Halenbeck Hall at 7 p.m. as they host their Annual Black/Red Classic.
