For years now, thousands of brides-to-be have emotionally laboured day and night to create the perfect handmade rustic barn wedding. It’s not a trend as much as a tsunami. In fact, if you type “rustic barn wedding” into Google you’ll be offered over 37 million search results full of raw timber, high ceilings, white bunting and festoon lights. So many festoon lights.
One million of those search results are probably photos of Reese Witherspoon’s latest real estate acquisition, a $9.2 million former wedding venue that’s also a hobby farm and guesthouse (according to a report from Variety). Located in the rolling foothills above Malibu’s Zuma Beach, the two-acre property has no shortage of idyllic backdrops, including dozens of 1,500-year-old sycamore trees, a fruit orchard, a natural creek, a vintage caravan and a little meadow devoted to Instagram-friendly lawn games like bocce. Even the chook pen is an ode to country chic (pictured below).
Multiple structures on the property provide everything a well-heeled hippy could ask for. There is a modern farmhouse, a barn guesthouse, and a detached art studio that could also be used as a yoga retreat. Packed with leafy outdoor entertaining areas, the farm offers no shortage of places to host large groups.
For more motivated bohemian aristocrats, the property also has state-of-the-art equestrian facilities, including a dressage ring and vine-draped stables.
If making and watching motion pictures is your thing (hello, Reese), the on-site film studio and screening room should come in handy.
Still not impressed? Well, the whole complex is also walking distance to the beach – apparently you can actually hear the waves from the grounds. It’s quite the weekender.
Or course, Witherspoon’s primary residence is still in Los Angeles – she paid more than $18.7 million for a mansion in Pacific Palisades in 2014 – but this is a nice little crash pad where she can throw an intimate party or take her horse for a ride (she proved her equestrian mettle in the 2010 film Water for Elephants).
Witherspoon also owns several properties in Nashville and a holiday home in the Bahamas – which is in a members-only community with guarded gates (the cheapest house there is worth $6.6 million). The Oscar and Emmy-winner certainly has no shortage of gorgeous places to curl up with a film script and plan her next hit TV series (Big Little Lies season three? Please?).
