L’Équipe have today released their ranking of estimated gross monthly salaries in French football, an analysis which includes the top flight of women’s football in the country.
The top 20 list is entirely made up of the D1 Arkema’s biggest spenders, Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain. The salaries are light-years behind those of their male counterparts, though. Lyon defender Wendie Renard and PSG forward Kadidiatou Diani top the list with €37,000 each, while Ada Hegerberg completes the podium at €35,000.
The top two sides in the league are the anomaly, however, with the division’s other 10 clubs paying far lower salaries. The vast majority of players earn less than €2,000 a month, while others even have a semi-professional or amateur status.
At a club like Issy-les-Moulineaux, whose finances are particularly dire, only 11 players are under federal contract while the rest work in other jobs, either at the club or elsewhere. This latter group earn €120 a match.
L’Équipe conclude that the FFF has launched a commission for women’s football, chaired by Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, so as to avoid English and Spanish clubs overtaking the French. The question of salaries is expected to be discussed.
