MEPs call on Juncker to resist Trump’s Muslim travel ban
US president has stated his intention to push forward with some form of restriction.
MEPs want the European Commission to use the transatlantic open skies deal to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump’s ban on nationals of seven countries with a Muslim-majority population from entering U.S. territory.
The measures, launched in January and blocked by U.S. federal courts, “triggered confusion and distress” at airports, French Green MEP and Transport and Tourism Committee Chair Karima Delli wrote in a letter sent today to Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that was seen by POLITICO.
She called on the Commission to hold an urgent meeting over the issue under the terms of the 2007 EU/U.S. open skies agreement that allows airlines from either side of the Atlantic to land on each others’ turf.
Trump has stated his intention to push forward with the ban or some form of it, regardless of opposition. The EU could seek to protect its citizens that also hold a passport from one of the seven countries, but so far there’s been no comprehensive response from Brussels.
“The air transport community has expressed the deepest surprise at the absence of coordination with stakeholders and the measure’s lack of clarity,” the committee letter states.

Also today, MEPs in the Civil Liberties Committee said the Commission should to take action to halt free entry for U.S. citizens to the EU as citizens from Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania still cannot enter the U.S. without a visa.
