The 2002 romantic tragedy A Walk to Remember, based on the 1999 Nicholas Sparks book of the same name, is one of those films that even from the title, we know will pull on the heartstrings, and tissues and tears will probably be involved. But, it’s a film (and book for those who also read the novel) that we all watched, because ultimately we’re suckers for a love story, whether it has a tragic or happy outcome, we’re in.
And, in the same way we were drawn into the emotional journey of A Walk to Remember, which starred Mandy Moore and Shane West, we know that when a film in a similar vein comes out, we’ll be right there, tuning in, tissues in one hand, a bowl of soothing ice cream in the other.
So gear up friends, because a movie that is being touted as the new A Walk to Remember is coming to the big screen in 2020.
I Still Believe, starring Riverdale’s KJ Apa, Britt Robertson and Shania Twain, has a similar tear-jerking storyline to A Walk to Remember: boy meets girl, they fall in love, the girl is very ill, they wed and then, hold the tears, because the couple’s story probably isn’t going to have a happily ever after.
Nicholas Sparks, the author behind A Walk to Remember, has said the book was inspired by his sister, whose story is similar to the main character’s, Jamie (played by Mandy Moore in the film). Sparks shared in a post on his website about A Walk to Remember that like Jamie, his sister was “sweet… had tremendously strong faith… was always cheerful,” and like the character of Jamie, his “sister got cancer” but met a man who loved her and married her even though he didn’t know what their future would hold.
I Still Believe is also based on a real-life story, that of Christian musician Jeremy Camp (KJ Apa in the upcoming film) and his first wife, Melissa (Britt Robertson), who died of cancer shortly after they tied the knot. The film’s name comes from Camp’s 2003 song of the same name, which was reportedly written after the death of Melissa and is also the name of Camp’s memoir.
The parallels between the two movies are many, so if you’re a fan of , it’s pretty likely you’re going to be a fan of I Still Believe. Watch the trailer below.
