It’s been almost a decade since fans said goodbye to Dr Izzie Stevens on the hit show, Grey’s Anatomy.

Katherine Heigl, 40, who gained recognition and won a Primetime Emmy Award for playing the kind, moral doctor, has since gone on to star in a number of other films and TV shows, including as a series regular on the final two seasons of legal drama Suits, the show Meghan Markle made her acting name on before she became a duchess. However, the 40-year-old’s Grey’s Anatomy character is still considered the defining role of the actress’s career.

Since she left the show in 2010, after reportedly asking to get out of her contract early to spend more time with her family — the actress has two adopted children and one biological child with husband Josh Kelley — both Heigl and Grey’s Anatomy’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, have spoken about bringing the fan-favourite character back to Seattle Grace Hospital.

But, in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, when the actress was asked whether she would consider the possibility of Izzie’s revival on the show, the Knocked Up star said it might be “distracting”.

“I don’t know. I don’t know if I would or if I wouldn’t [return to Grey’s Anatomy],” Entertainment Tonight reports Heigl said. “I almost feel like that would almost be distracting again to, sort of, what they’ve done with that show in the seven years since I left… and what that’s become and what it is to the fans now.”

Heigl also noted that she hasn’t exactly thought about her character, Izzie, for years and her return could prompt questions like “Why are you here?” from fans.

She added that the overall decision to come back would be a “tough one” to make. However, the show she is currently starring, Suits, does have a strong precedent for leading characters to make a triumphant return.

For the ninth and final season of Suits, Patrick J. Adams, who plays Mike Ross on the hit show, is making his return after leaving the show along with Meghan Markle — his on-screen wife — in season seven, despite having reportedly said when he left that he had “said his goodbyes” to the character. Will Heigl repeat an Adams-style character revival of her own on after has wrapped? Just like any good TV drama, we’ll have to wait and see.
