In July of this year, Grammy-winning songstress Taylor Swift, 29, took to Tumblr to share her thoughts on a record deal that left the masters for six of her best-selling records including 1989 and Reputation at her previous record label, Big Machine Records, and would, under a new deal, mean talent manager Scooter Braun’s company would now own those masters.
The singer noted that having Braun — who she felt had “tried to dismantle” her career — in charge of her masters was her “worst case scenario”.
At the time, a number of celebrities including Justin Bieber and original Swift squad member, Cara Delevingne, commented on the situation, either supporting Braun as Bieber did or, supporting Swift as Delevingne did.
Former American Idol winner and fellow Grammy-winning artist, Kelly Clarkson, also weighed in with a suggestion that Swift appears to have taken to heart.
Variety reported at the time that Clarkson tweeted the following: “@taylorswift13 just a thought, U should go in & re-record all the songs you don’t own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand new art & some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old version. I’d buy all of the new versions just to prove a point.”

The publication noted that a number of music artists including rock band Def Leppard had “re-released their music under similar circumstances in the past”, but the publication also pointed out that Swift was unlikely to have the same “favourable” contract terms as Def Leppard was able to obtain, allowing them to re-release their music.
Contract issues aside, according to , in a preview of the upcoming interview on the CBS Sunday Morning show, Swift reportedly appears to be taking Clarkson’s advice, saying she plans to re-record her earlier music.
Per , when asked by interviewer Robin Roberts if she had any plans to re-record her earlier music, the singer reportedly gave a definitive answer, saying “yeah, absolutely”.
According to NPR, Swift then provided further details about how and when she planned to undertake this project. “Yeah, and it’s something that I’m very excited about doing, because my contract says that starting November 2020 — so, next year — I can record albums one through five all over again — I’m very excited about it. I think artists deserve to own their work. I just feel very passionately about that,” Swift reportedly told Roberts.
NPR notes that it’s not known as yet what the re-recording status of her sixth album released under her previous label, 2017’s Reputation, is.
