It’s tough out there for those who love to dress up; the fashion industry has, for a long time, been no friend to the environment and while we are collectively waking up to our impact on the earth, some brands are well ahead of the game and deserve their dues. Or so Camille Charriere believes.
Charriere has teamed up with Peony Swim, a sustainable swimwear line that is dedicated to minimising our impact on the planet and giving us great options for the beach – because the two aren’t mutually exclusive.
“Peony is committed to producing swimwear in a more sustainable way, and those are exactly the type of brands I want to be lending my voice to,” Charriere says of the collaboration, which is the brand’s first sustainable capsule collection constructed entirely from Econyl, a 100% regenerated nylon yarn made from abandoned ocean plastic.
“Swimwear that’s good for the soul”, is how Peony positions itself and it’s an ethos that feels perfect for today, or so the brand’s celebrity fan base feel, with the likes of Bella Hadid, Maia Cotton and Kendall Jenner hitting the sand sporting the label.

“It is a difficult time to be working in fashion right now. Whereas us fashion lovers used to just be able to try out trends and spend money on clothes for the sheer joy of it, we have been faced with the facts of a truly devastating ecological crisis, and unless we act fast, and change the way we consume and produce the things we wear, we are going to be in big trouble,” says Charriere, adding she’s keen to be at the forefront of driving that change.

“I like the fact that the product itself is utterly beautiful: both the prints and the cuts are stunning. I think that in 2019, a sustainable brand should aim to look as good as any other product on the market. You shouldn’t be able to tell the difference,” Charriere advises, adding some of her favourite sustainable labels include Patagonia, Reformation, Everlane, Veja and All Blues.
Flattering one pieces, sturdy bikini tops that offer support and flattering high-waisted cuts are all staples for Peony, which has opted for a palette of soft pinks and muted greens in gingham and micro florals for the capsule collection, which is now available to purchase on Net-A-Porter.
“It’s also important to remember that a bathing suit is an item of clothing that doesn’t last forever; most of my bikinis lose their shape and their colour, as I’m very active and basically live in them all summer long. For that reason, it’s really nice to know that what I do end up buying is made from recycled and sustainable fabric, so that I know even though I am going through several a season, I am minimising my planetary impact in my own small way!” Charriere concludes.
As for buying swimwear, or anything for that matter, with confidence, Charriere has some rules worth jotting down: “Know your body type, don’t be scared to try loads on and never shy away from getting a size up (there is nothing worse than a bikini that’s too tight)!”
