Graphic Video Shows CA Scooter-Rider Dragging Small Dog At 15 MPH

BAKERSFIELD, CA — Graphic new video appears to show a scooter rider in Bakersfield riding on a street and dragging a dog behind her. KGET-TV posted the video Monday on Facebook and wrote that witnesses reported seeing a woman riding a Bird scooter in the city’s downtown section, “dragging a dog.” Police are reportedly investigating.

In the surveillance video, a woman in a red shirt rides a scooter on a street in a residential area. Though it’s tough to tell in the initial video, subsequent footage clearly shows she’s dragging a dog behind her.

Once she realizes what’s happening, she stops the vehicle and turns around to help the distressed animal. While holding onto the scooter in one hand, the woman picks up the dog with the other — by what appears to be its leash — and drags the animal a few more feet toward the curb. When that plan didn’t work, the rider gently laid the scooter on the street and picked up the dog with both hands to console it. A bicyclist then rides up behind her.

KBAK-TV reported that one of the videos was captured by James Dowell on Sunday afternoon near A and 19th streets.

Facebook user Brandon Sanders wrote in a graphic post that he encountered the woman and dog while riding a bicycle. He said the dog was left bloodied and had been dragged the length of a football field at about 15 mph. In two photos accompanying his post, the gray dog’s paws were clearly covered in blood.

“She had the nerve to tell us that ‘s— happens, just like with kids,'” wrote Sanders. He later added:”Ummm yeah I don’t drag my kids down the street by a leash.”

23ABC reported that no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.

A spokesperson for Bird told Patch in a statement Tuesday the company found the video “deeply disturbing.”

“This type of rider behavior is wrong and prohibited by Bird,” the statement said. “As soon as we were made aware of the video, we began our own investigation of the incident and have suspended the account for the individual involved in the incident.”

The company encouraged the public to continue reporting incidents that it called “irresponsible.”

“We investigate all reports directed to Bird and take appropriate measures, including removing people from the Bird platform,” the statement said.
