With so many TV shows getting reboots (Beverly Hills 90210, Party of Five!?), revivals and spin-offs it’s almost impossible to keep track of what to put on your must-watch list. But, the latest spin-off from the CW network’s cult teen drama Riverdale, looks set to be one of the shows that you need to know — not solely because of the entertainment value but also because of the pop culture currency the show, called Katy Keene, is certain to have.
Indeed, has already expanded its universe into a successful spin-off series by way of the , now in its second season with a third in the works.
Here’s everything we know so far about the CW’s planned Riverdale spin-off, Katy Keene.
Glad you asked, Katy Keene is, like the characters on Riverdale (Archie, Veronica, Jughead, Betty), based on a character from the Archie Comics universe. She was created by American cartoonist Bill Woggon in 1945 and was marketed to readers as ‘America’s Queen of Pin-Ups and Fashions’.
This cartoon fashion icon was a multi-hyphenate before that even became a thing, claiming an occupation as model/actress/singer. According to comic legend, Keene’s backstory is she was discovered in college and went to New York with aspirations of being a Broadway star, subsequently finding fame and fortune through modelling and acting.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the show will be a musical dramedy chronicling “the origins and struggles of…four aspiring artists who are trying to make it on Broadway, on the runway and in the recording studio.” Which sounds a lot like Katy Keene and her pals are younger, singing, dancing, modelling, theatre-loving versions of Sex and the City’s Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. Just four friends, in New York, chasing their dreams. On top of that, if this sneak peek from the set of the series (see below) is anything to go by, a proposal may also be in Katy Keene’s future.
The series has officially been picked up to series by the CW and is slated to premiere in 2020.
Yes. The CW released an extended trailer in August, introducing us to Katy and her friends, who are all chasing their dreams in New York City. As Katy says: “This is the greatest time of our lives.” Watch the trailer below.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Katy Keene will jump “several years [ahead] from the current Riverdale timeline, so crossovers are not planned.”
Lucy Hale has been cast to star as the fabulous Katy Keene, and her boyfriend K.O. Kelly, will be played by actor Zane Holtz. Ashleigh Murray who plays aspiring singer Josie McCoy on Riverdale will also join the cast. Camille Hyde, Lucien Laviscount, Julia Chan, and Johnny Beauchamp have now also been cast to feature in the hotly-anticipated series.
There’s no air date as yet for the show, but when the CW released the extended trailer on YouTube, they noted the show is “coming soon” and it is reportedly set to air some time in 2020. No news on where we’ll be able to watch it in Australia as yet, but check back here, we’ll update this story with any new details.
