There are silver screen icons and then there’s Dame Elizabeth Taylor. The actress and activist, who passed away in 2011, captivated audiences around the world with her acting skills (she won two Oscars over the course of her film career), her extraordinary violet eyes, her fascinating personal life (she was married eight times), her jewellery collection and her HIV/AIDS activism.

So, it should come as no surprise that this once-in-a-generation figure is the subject of an upcoming biopic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman—the producers behind Oscar-winning film, The King’s Speech—are working on an Elizabeth Taylor biopic, titled A Special Relationship, which will star Rachel Weisz as the iconic actress.

Per the publication, the biopic will “explore Taylor’s journey from actress to activist through the lens of her friendship with her assistant, Roger Wall.”

From the cast to the plot, here’s everything we know so far about A Special Relationship.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, British-born Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz has been cast to star as the iconic Hollywood actress, Elizabeth Taylor. Variety reports producers Canning and Sherman said Weisz’s casting is perfect: “There is no one more iconic than Elizabeth Taylor, and Simon Beaufoy has written a role that shines a light on Elizabeth’s humour and humanity, which will be beautifully brought to life through the extraordinary talents of Rachel Weisz.”

No further details as yet on who else will be in the cast, including who will play opposite Weisz in the role of her assistant, Roger Wall.

A Special Relationship will reportedly cover the time in Taylor’s life when she transitioned from being known as an award-winning, jet-setting actress whose name was synonymous with a lavish Hollywood lifestyle and multiple marriages, to a high-profile activist. Taylor’s activism was notably around HIV/AIDS, and over the course of her humanitarian efforts, she reportedly helped to raise over US$270 million (approximately AU$395 million) for the cause.

Taylor’s HIV/AIDS activism began in the 1980s and continued for the remainder of her life. Variety reports it initially “stemmed” from hiring a new personal assistant, Roger Wall, “a gay man who grew up in poverty in the homophobic Deep South in the mid-1980s.”

Per Variety, the film’s producers said that the story being told through Taylor and Wall’s friendship “is a celebration of how friendships can change people’s lives, and how Elizabeth helped change the world.”

The reports the script has been written by ’s Simon Beaufoy, who drew from “hours of interviews and exclusive conversations with people who knew Taylor”. Per , the script offers real insight into Taylor’s life and has been described by the filmmakers as a “never-before-seen portrait of the real woman behind the violet eyes”.
