England: Jonny May makes incredible recovery from dislocated elbow to rejoin squad

England wing Jonny May has made a Lazarus-like recovery after dislocating his elbow while playing for Gloucester 10 days ago.

The 32-year-old looked in significant discomfort after he sustained the injury while jumping for a high ball in the Cherry and Whites’ game against London Irish.

May appeared set for a significant spell on the sidelines – almost certainly missing the entire Autumn Nations Series campaign – but he has been named in the updated Red Rose squad.

England without their captain

Head coach Eddie Jones has selected a 36-man group ahead of their international clash against Argentina but it does not include captain Courtney Lawes or flanker Lewis Ludlam.

Lawes is still suffering the effects of a head injury sustained on September 24 while fellow Northampton Saints player Ludlam has an abdominal issue.

Saints’ director of rugby Phil Dowson said on Saturday: “He (Lawes) went to see a specialist this week. He will keep going through the process until he feels better.

“It’s day by day with him. He is biking, lifting weights and running.

“He still gets symptoms, and we cannot move beyond that point until he is OK.

“If he feels brilliant on Monday and he is flying around and Eddie (Jones) wants him to play some minutes, it’s up to him.

“He won’t necessarily need to play for us first because he usually drops right in. It will be interesting to see what Eddie says.”

Playmaker Owen Farrell is selected, however, as he continues his return from concussion, with Henry Slade also there after missing out when the initial England squad was named.

Slade had been recalled as cover last week following injuries to May, Farrell and Henry Arundell, but keeps his place in the group despite the former two returning to fitness.
