A folk singer and former talent show judge in Croatia is vying to be president with a pledge to dig up the ‘Auschwitz of the Balkans’ amid a bitter rows over the state’s complicity in Nazi war crimes.

Miroslav Skoro, who gained fame for his patriotically-themed lute songs during the wars in the Balkans in the 1990s is polling just behind incumbent Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic of the ruling center-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
Mrs Grabar-Kitarovic and Mr Skoro are fighting to win over HDZ’s nationalist wing, many of whom believe the party has become too moderate.
