Fashion is fickle, with the tide often changing on what’s in and out in a matter of months these days. One voice among the mayhem has always been clear though, a guiding light in the changeable mood of the industry: Anna Wintour.

The editor-in-chief of Vogue US, has, for a long time now, been the voice the world listens too, disseminated through the pages of the iconic magazine title.

So when Wintour speaks to her favourite trends or accessories, it’s no wonder we all sit up and listen, especially when the editor turns her astute eye on the humble thong.

A classic form of footwear for Australians, the thong, or flip flop, has garnered a lot of attention of late across the globe, thanks to the Scandi set and one Kim Kardashian West who has slipped into the heeled version of late. In the latest installment of Go Ask Anna, in which the general public are given the opportunity to pose questions to Wintour, one woman quizzes the high priestess of fashion on flip flops, as Americans love to call them.

“I love a flip flop,” Wintour responds. And with that you can almost hear the collective slap of thongs hitting the ground around the globe, getting their day in the sun. Other fashionable and ‘of-the-season’ tips from Wintour in this episode of Go Ask Anna include, her thoughts on the handbag of the moment (Wintour herself doesn’t carry one!).

“To be honest, I rarely wear a handbag but I am told by my team here at Vogue that it’s all about the cross-body handbag. Which makes a lot of sense to me because it’s practical, hands-free. You can bicycle around Manhattan enjoying Central Park and they also come in every shape, size, fabrication, so that would be my tip for the season,” Wintour quips before going on to give her opinion on marrying casual dress with professionalism.

“Personally, I’m not too big a fan of casual. I think I always prefer when someone errs on the side of dressed,” Wintour says, before noting one member of her team turned up to the 2019 Met Gala sans tie but with a hat instead – she was not a fan. While the humble thong might be deemed casual clothing, the Australian and Scandi style set have proven, with the right pieces, thongs really can take you anywhere.
