When the HBO TV series, Game of Thrones — adapted from the Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin — ended with a big-yet-divisive note in May this year after eight epically dramatic seasons, it appeared fans would be relegated to watching reruns whenever they had a hankering to return to Westeros (well, until one of HBO’s slated four Game of Thrones prequels dropped of course).

As previously reported, a prequel starring Australia’s own Naomi Watts is already in the works at HBO, with George R.R. Martin (who has co-written the upcoming series) revealing in an interview that it will be so far back in the past that instead of the seven kingdoms of Westeros fans know and love, it will be set in a time that has 100 kingdoms. Martin also revealed that in terms of familiar names, the Starks and the white walkers would feature but the Lannisters wouldn’t initially feature in the series.

And while one prequel would usually satisfy even the most avid fans of any show, this is Game of Thrones we’re talking about — a show that’s on a completely different playing field. So, it makes sense that The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that a second Game of Thrones prequel is now also in the works.

According to the publication, HBO is nearing a deal for a “pilot order for a [Game of Thrones] prequel set 300 years before the events of the flagship series that tracks the beginnings and the end of House Targaryen.”

The script will reportedly be based on George R.R. Martin’s 2018 Fire & Blood book, which tells the history of House Targaryen. Martin and Ryan J. Condal (who is best known for Colony) are reportedly set to write the script.

Notably, The Hollywood Reporter shared that, while HBO initially announced they had four prequels in the works, this latest Targaryen-focussed prequel wasn’t included in that four. The publication further pointed out that three of the original four announced are “still active” at HBO (including the Naomi Watts-starring iteration), suggesting perhaps that this new prequel will replace the original fourth that appears to have been quietly filed away.

No casting details have been announced as yet for the House Targaryen prequel, but check back here — we’ll update this story as more details are revealed.
