FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Minnesota wrestling program split their duals on the first day of the South Beach Duals with a loss to Lehigh followed by a victory over Old Dominion.
The Gophers weren’t able to muster a rally against the Mountain Hawks before falling 29-10 while they took care of business against the Monarchs by a score of 25-10.
Three Gophers got their hand raised in both of the day’s matches: 141-pound Mitch McKee, 165-pound Bailee O’Reilly, and heavyweight Gable Steveson.
At 133-pounds Jake Gliva, a Simley High School graduate, made his first career dual debut becoming the fourth Gopher to make their first dual start this season.
Two individuals recorded their first ranked victories of the season against Old Dominion: 125-pound Patrick McKee and 165-pound Bailee O’Reilly. McKee won by 8-3 decision while O’Reilly was victorious by an 11-2 major decision.
Ryan Thomas and Caden Steffen participated in the individual tournament after the conclusion of dual-action.
Minnesota continues the event tomorrow morning at Noon CT against the Duke Blue Devils and in the afternoon against the Cornell Big Red.
Lehigh Recap
In the Gopher’s first match of the event, they fell to No.14 Lehigh 29-10 with three individual bout victories.
After the conclusion of the dual, the Gophers were deducted a team point for “control of the mat.”
The Maroon and Gold took home victories at 141-pounds, 165-pounds, and heavyweight thanks to McKee, O’Reilly, and Steveson respectively. Both McKee and Steveson recorded shutout major decisions.
At 149-pounds Brayton Lee was disqualified in the first period after an “illegal move” while finishing a single leg takedown. The referee whistled things dead after Lee turned the leg and, after injury time, Lehigh was awarded the full six team points.

Old Dominion Recap
The Gophers bounced back in the afternoon with a 25-10 victory over Old Dominion that featured a pair of bonus-point victories as well as a pair of upsets.
Pat McKee once again got the Gophers started at 125-pounds with a victory over No.10 Killian Cardinale. After securing the first takedown and subsequent nearfall points McKee was able to record his first ranked victory of the year.
Bailee O’Reilly followed up McKee’s performance with an 11-2 major decision victory over No.24 Shane Jones for a ranked victory of his own.
Closing things out was Steveson earning a first-period pin, and his second bonus victory, in his third bout of the season
The victory came over former Gophers starter, and current Monarchs volunteer assistant coach, Steve Bleise.
