Recycle My Run: Runner’s Need Step Up On Sustainability At The Royal Parks Half Marathon

Runners Need celebrate the return of their Recycle My Run initiative with the Royal Parks Half Marathon 2018, hosting a collection point in the race village to encourage runners to donate an old pair of trainers at this year’s event.

After a number of hugely successful years, London’s premier running specialist retailer Runners Need is offering anyone that donates their shoes at designated drop off points – in the race village and in their 38 stores nationwide – a £20 voucher to spend in store. Collaborating with the esteemed London event – the Royal Parks Half Marathon on the 14th of October – runners nationwide will be rewarded for the many miles they’ve put in to their trainers.

The average person consumes over 20kgs of clothing per year, and in the UK 300 million pairs of running shoes are thrown out annually. With every effort being made to reduce plastic waste and the impact on the environment, the running industry is taking note and changing the game. Runners Need recommend changing your trainers every 500 miles to prevent injury and maximise performance, and that care and caution can be extended to the environment too. With almost 40 stations to recycle your old trainers across the country, the practise is simple and effective.

To ensure that they go to every effort with the initiative, Runners Need have partnered with clothing and shoe recyclers SOEX to ensure each pair of used trainers’ is maximised to its potential. Working in 90 countries across four continents they are one of the largest textile recycling companies in the world. The trainers will be reused where possible across the world, and kept as functional shoes for as long they can. When they become unwearable, they will be broken down in to over 80 different components, with every single part being recycled. Each element is milled down to become a whole host of items: including new trainers, athletics tracks, and all-weather sports pitches… No other recycling initiative recycles each component so comprehensively.

Join us at the Royal Parks Half Marathon race village to launch this year’s collection and celebrate every runner that crosses the line.
