RENTON, WA – The Federal Aviation Administration will issue an airworthiness notification on Monday for the Renton-built Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet, signaling confidence in the safety of the airplane after an Ethiopian Airlines crash on Sunday.
FAA’s announcement comes after China grounded all 737 MAX 8s operating in the country following Sunday’s crash.
“Today, the FAA will issue a continued airworthiness notification to the international community (CANIC) for Boeing 737 MAX operators. The FAA continuously oversees and assesses the safety performance of U.S. commercial aircraft. If we identify an issue that affects safety, the FAA will take immediate and appropriate action,” the agency said in a statement on Monday.
Sunday’s crash killed all 157 people aboard the plane, and follows an October crash of a Lion Air 737 MAX 8. A preliminary investigation of the Lion Air crash found that the plane’s angle-of-attack sensor was faulty, triggering an autopilot system to push the nose of the plane down. Boeing issued a bulletin in November to advise pilots how to deal with such sensor readings.
Both the Ethiopian and Lion Air MAX 8s were new when they crashed. Only American Airlines and Southwest Airlines use the MAX 8 in the U.S.
Indonesia has also ground MAX 8s pending the outcome of nationwide inspections.
