Miami Firefighters Mistake Alligator For Person Who Needed Help

MIAMI, FL — Miami firefighters mistakenly confused an alligator for a person who needed help over the weekend.

They both got a surprise.

“As they drove up, that’s when they realized it was an alligator,” Capt. Ignatius Carroll told Patch on Saturday. “They thought it was a body laying on the sidewalk.”

The incident happened shortly after 11 pm on Friday as the crew from Miami Fire Rescue #10 was on its way back to the station. They came across the alligator in the intersection of Northwest 37th Avenue and 13th Street.

“According to the lieutenant on the unit, they drove up on what appeared to be an unconscious person on the sidewalk,” explained Carroll. “As they got closer, they found a 10-to-12 foot alligator.”

The crew stayed and made sure no real people or cars got too close as the alligator proceeded to cross the street.

“Miami fire and police personnel followed the alligator into a residential backyard where it became contained,” said Carroll. “Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation dispatched an alligator trapper to come and remove the gator.” The alligator was euthanized for safety reasons.
