WOODRIDGE, IL — A 33-year-old woman has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for paying $12,000 in bitcoin to a company on the “dark web” to put a hit out on her lover’s wife, a Woodridge woman. Tina Jones, 33, a former Loyola Medical Center nurse from Des Plaines, pleaded guilty to one felony count of attempted first degree murder.
Police first learned of Jones’s plot in April 2018 via a phone call from the CBS TV show “48 Hours” alerting them of a murder-for-hire plot with links to Woodridge. An investigation led police to discover that Jones had paid an entity called the Sicilian Hitmen International Network more than $12,000 in bitcoin to murder her romantic rival.
Jones was arrested before being released on bond and has been living in Georgia with relatives since April 23, 2018.
The murder-for-hire contract reportedly “gave the hitman clear instructions to make sure her lover was unharmed” and to make the incident appear accidental. A Woodridge detective in 2018 also told a judge that Jones attempted to cover up her own alleged affair and told the hitman she wanted it to appear as though the victim was the one having the affair.
In a statement, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said, “Thankfully, the intended victim, whom the defendant deemed a romantic rival, was unharmed even though Jones carefully planned the murder and paid more than $12,000 in bitcoins to the Sicilian Hitmen International Network to carry out the murder. This type of pre-meditated criminal scheming is an incredibly serious offense that warrants a serious punishment, as the defendant learned today.”
Jones must serve 85 percent of her sentence before she will be eligible for bail.
