Lizzo has long had a cult following, but 2019 has been the year she’s finally hit the mainstream. The Detroit-born singer and rapper – whose latest albumreached number six in the US Billboard Charts in April – has won over fans with her earworm lyrics, signature twerking and flute-playing, and general unabashed confidence.
When it comes to her style, there’s no danger of Lizzo holding back. Her onstage outfits are a clear reflection of the body positivity she’s keen to champion: see the one-legged jumpsuit she wore at Coachella in April; her purple metallic bodysuit at Glastonbury in June; and next level bridal-inspired look at the BET Awards the same month.
On the red carpet, Lizzo never dials down her maximalist approach either. This year’s camp theme at the Met Gala was made for her, interpreted via a pink feathered cape and gown by Marc Jacobs, complete with matching wig.
