As one of the influential young star’s of Netflix’s cult sci-fi series, , 15-year-old British actress Millie Bobby Brown is no stranger to setting trends. The teen was one of the first to sport Louis Vuitton’s space-age Archlight trainers on the red carpet back in 2017 and recently debuted a bubblegum pink Rodarte gown for the season 3 premiere at LA’s Santa Monica Pier – a look that wouldn’t be out of place in 1986 Brat Pack classic, .
The parallels with the wardrobes of 1980s teen megastars don’t end there. In season 3, Brown’s on-screen character, the paranormally-gifted Eleven Hopper, is seen grappling with socks and stilettos and dripping in costume jewellery as she throws shapes to Madonna’s at Starcourt Mall.
The peak of Eleven’s Eighties casual-chic? Her pineapple yellow scrunchie (introduced in episode 4, ‘The Sauna Test’), which encapsulates 2019’s celebrity street-style mood.
“I like the thought of making an effort with your hair accessories,” says Ganni creative director, Ditte Reffstrup. The Copenhagen-based label created the oversized floral scrunchie you’ve probably seen on your Instagram feed, with a view to reducing manufacturing waste too. “We make them out of leftover fabrics to match the prints of each season, so that the material doesn’t go unused.”
It’s perhaps no coincidence that Brown’s co-star Winona Ryder features in one of cinema’s greatest scrunchie moments of all time. A sumptuous scarlet hair-tie played a key role in Michael Lehmann’s darkly comic 1988 hit , indicating who was the high-school’s reining female ruler during deadly power shifts.
Channel the vintage mood, minus the classroom politics or monsters, with Jennifer Behr’s hammered silk scrunchie: an indulgent summery pick-me-up that lightens the mood of neat office tailoring. Twinning with your friend (as El does with Max) is optional.
