Contrary to what some people may think, you can never have too many shoes. Every occasion—work, weddings, temperamental weather forecasts—merits a different pair of shoes that are both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Seasonal changes, new trends and the return of old ones on and off the fashion runways emphasise the importance of footwear to express your personality or channel your mood. And, as if you needed any further persuasion, footwear (unlike clothing) always fits.
While admiring the works of shoe experts like Gianvito Rossi or Aquazzura is easy and requires no effort at all, justifying the purchase of yet another pair of shoes can be a significant challenge. You know how it is—one has to ask themselves a set of all-too-familiar questions: will these shoes still be cool in a year’s time? Will I get my cost-per-wear out of them? Are these shoes waterproof? Will they go on sale soon? Does this purchase exceed my budget?
But what if the future of our feet was written in the stars? No one would dare argue with astrology. Our star signs play a huge role in our day-to-day lives, informing our relationships, our careers and, believe it or not, our sartorial styles.
Whether you’ve been eyeing a pair of shoes for a while but can’t take the plunge, or you’ve been looking for an excuse to treat yourself, look no further than the stars for a horoscopic reading on which shoes you should (or shouldn’t) buy.

Capricorn
22 December – 20 January
An earth sign ruled by Saturn, Capricorns value quality craftsmanship, tradition and discipline, basing their decision-making on past experience and the expertise of others. Ever practical, quality is key for Capricorns, so drown out the noise and avoid testing the staying power of trends. Look to sturdier, practical shoes like loafers or boots crafted in long wearing materials like leather, and preferably made in Italy, the proverbial beating heart of well made shoes. Concentrate on storied brands that specialise in shoes and leather goods and that have stood the test of time, like Gucci. And if, like most Capricorns, you are fearlessly ambitious, epitomise this quality (without compromising practicality) with a comfortable high heel from Manolo Blahnik.

Aquarius
21 January – 18 February
An air sign ruled by Uranus and Saturn, Aquarius-born shoe lovers are inventive, individual, intelligent and independent, though they can be unpredictable—meaning they might turn up in a head-turning pair of shoes at any moment. Forgo boring styles and buy boldly—consider a quirky heel or boot a la Sophia Webster, Acne Studios or Proenza Schouler that features embellishments, beading or some mixed metal hardware.

Pisces
19 February – 20 March
A water sign ruled by Neptune and Jupiter, those with Pisces signs are known to be romantic, imaginative, artistic and musical—they are die-hard shoe lovers and appreciate each pair they own as a masterwork. Not all shoes are worthy, though. Pisces should look for footwear that transports you to another place—think Vetements lighter heels or Alexander McQueen’s famous armadillo boots or Dior J’adior slingback flats.

Aries
21 March – 19 April
A fire sign ruled by Mars, it’s no wonder Aries are known for their courage, confidence, passion and versatility. In shoe speak: Aries will make any shoe they like work. Courage and confidence translate to high heels in bold hues (hello, Christian Louboutin) while passion and versatility point to footwear that is waterproof or practical, or better yet, both. Sneakers (think Balenciaga Triple S) will do the trick, or alternatively, opt for an an interesting flat-heel hybrid (think Loewe) to get the conversation rolling.

A classic Chanel ballerina or a pair of sneakers by Saint Laurent offer foolproof, year-round wear. Don’t mistake practicality for boredom—these shoes are everlasting classics, just switch up colourways and play with prints while keeping to a sensible silhouette.

Gemini
21 May – 21 June
An air sign ruled by Mercury, Gemini are notorious for their split personalities—they are as adaptable and quick-witted as they can be restless, and they may lack consistency, but on the flipside, this makes them versatile! What this means when it comes to your feet is that Geminis should make allowances to mix things up and keep their shoes light-hearted. Think fur-lined loafers as made popular by Gucci and Celine for winter, and delicate strappy sandals as exemplified by The Row come summertime.

Cancer
22 June – 22 July
A water sign ruled by the moon, Cancer-born shoe lovers are identifiably creative, spontaneous, faithful and emotional. In other words, once they settle on a pair of shoes they like, they wear them until they wear out. And, on occasion, they spring forth and opt for a surprising silhouette, comfortable in the knowledge that if it doesn’t work, the rest of their shoes will. For a loyal companion for your feet, look no further than a beautiful yet edgy pair of heels (think Valentino Rockstuds) or trustworthy boots by Aeydē that combine comfort and style seamlessly.

Leo
23 July – 22 August
A fire sign ruled by the sun, Leos are understood to be cheerful, humorous and energetic. In the realm of shoes, this translates to pairs that generate fun on the part of the wearer and observer alike. A pair of pointed heels from Miu Miu won’t take themselves too seriously. If these aren’t quite your style, alternate with Aquazzura, which will send this same message without having to say anything at all.

Virgo
23 August – 22 September
An earth sign ruled by Mercury, hardworking, practical and meticulous are qualities that come to mind when considering the personalities of Virgos. An attention to detail is always front of mind, naturally making Virgos inclined to wear show-stopping shoes that put in all the work for their entire outfit. Consider Amina Muaddi’s incredible square-heeled shoes—each a beautiful distillation of the designer’s vision, particularity and knack for perfect execution. Otherwise, opt for shoes by Dior, where Maria Grazia Chiuri helms the label and neatly balances utility with Parisian chic.

Libra
23 September – 23 October
An air sign ruled by Venus, Libras are understood to be romantic, charming and diplomatic, always striving for balance and harmony. A classic pump exemplifies this equilibrium—look to Jimmy Choo or Prada to execute flawlessly.
