Billie Eilish style file

Pop phenomenon Billie Eilish’s deftly casual look is what the fashion world has been waiting for. The 17-year-old is currently redressing outdated notions that once dictated how a female pop star should dress, and the fact that Eilish’s style isn’t about flesh-baring sensuality has struck a chord with her fans, as well as the biggest names in the fashion industry, including Stella McCartney.

The designer tapped the star to reveal her new All Together Now collection (inspired by The Beatles movie ) on stage at 2019’s Glastonbury Festival, with a custom-made stage outfit of characteristically long-line basketball shorts and matching T-shirt fashioned from organic cotton worn with Eilish’s signature layered jewellery.

Eilish, a Los Angeles native who sprung to fame in 2016 following her SoundCloud release of ethereal track , has been outspoken about using oversized clothing to defy online scrutiny. “I never want the world to know everything about me. That’s why I wear big, baggy clothes,” she revealed during a recent campaign video for Calvin Klein. “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘She’s slim-thick,’ ‘She’s not slim-thick,’ ‘She’s got a flat ass,’ ‘She’s got a fat ass.’”

The star’s sentiments are unifying a generation who write their own rules. Aside from putting goth style in the spotlight (“people don’t give goths enough credit… everyone’s goth now”) and showing her respect for Avril Lavigne and Japanese manga series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, the teenage sensation is also setting her own agenda when it comes to gender norms.

“You know what, I actually really like high heels. I think high heels are really dope and I’ve been feeling the urge to put them on recently. I’ve got acrylic nails, I wore hair extensions the other day,” she explained in a recent video interview with American music platform, Pitchfork, before stating for the record that “comfort is not always key”.
