Princess Diana would have turned 58 on July 1 this year and to mark the occasion her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, both paid tribute to their beloved mum in their own touching ways.

Town & Country reports that at a mentoring summit for The Diana Award — an award the organisation’s website says is awarded to young people aged between nine and 25 “for their social action or humanitarian work”— Prince Harry, 34, spoke about what an important role model his mum was. “My mother, Princess Diana, was a role model to so many, without realising the impact she would have on so many lives. You don’t have to be a princess or a public figure to be a role model, in fact it’s equally valuable if you’re not because it’s more relatable.”

Per the publication, the Duke of Sussex then spoke about parenting and how, as a new dad to baby Archie, he’s realised the importance of being a good role model. “Perhaps it’s the newfound clarity I have as a father knowing that my son will always be watching what I do, mimicking my behaviour, one day maybe even following in my footsteps.”

According to The Diana Award website the award was established in memory of Princess Diana and is supported by both Prince Harry and Prince William. Attending an event for the organisation and speaking about his mum seems a touching and special way for Prince Harry to have honoured the date of her birth.

Prince William, 37, also honoured his late mum on her birthday in a different but just as heartfelt way. Town & Country reports a number of royal fans had gathered outside Kensington Palace from 5.30 in the morning to hold a vigil for Princess Diana on what would have been her 58th birthday. The group have reportedly been holding this vigil on her birthday for years and this year, Prince William stepped out to thank them.

According to Town & Country the Duke of Cambridge stepped outside the palace gates to greet the fans and thank them for their kindness towards his mum. “William told me he knew we’d been coming here for years and thanked us for what we were doing for his mother,” one of the group, John Loughrey, reportedly said, adding that it was very emotional, “I’m still shaking now. I feel very emotional.”

Loughrey also mentioned that he asked Prince William about a memorial statue for Princess Diana reportedly planned for outside Kensington Palace and the duke told him it would be happening imminently: “Soon, very soon. We just want to make sure it is right. It’s important to get it right.”
