Aside from winning four Golden Globes and eight Emmys for its first season, what else is HBO series Big Little Lies famous for? If you’re thinking its the A-list cast, then you’d almost half right. Described by New York Times’ Vulture as having the “best real-estate porn on television”, we consider the houses in Big Little Lies as having equal billing alongside stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, and more recently, Meryl Streep. Yep, they’re that much a part of the landscape of the show. And as viewers it’s near impossible to ignore the presence of such vast, glass-fronted mansions.

Adapted from Australian author Liane Moriarty’s bestseller of the same name, the HBO series (now showing its second season) transported the book’s original Sydney northern beaches setting to the bigger-budget, bigger-housed locale of Monterey. With its stunning coastal California terrain and equally impressive beachfront properties, the mini-series sure does a fine job advertising the California real estate market. It’s so good, that when we saw that one of the houses used in the series was up for rental, we couldn’t help but take a closer look.

Fans of the show will no doubt recognise the home belonging to Reese Witherspoon’s character Madeline, which she shares with husband Ed and daughters Abigail and Chloe.
In the show it’s supposed to be located in Monterey, but the real-life home can actually be found in Malibu on 30760 Broad Beach Road.
Available to rent for US$3,000-5,000 a night ($4,349-7,248), the listing is with Malibu Luxury Vacation Homes. Boasting a huge seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, the house sleeps 12, so would be ideal for a multi-generation family or group of friends.

Designed in a Cape Cod style, anyone familiar with the show will recognise the white interiors of the kitchen and living room, which open out onto a deck with water views.

There are two master bedrooms in the main house. The upstairs master has its own a private deck with an outdoor fireplace, and attaches to an adjoining bedroom.
The downstairs master also has its own deck, this time featuring a jacuzzi. Featuring his and hers bathrooms and closets, it’s ideal for a beach-loving couple. The bedroom even opens out directly onto the sand.
While the main house contains six bedrooms, each with its own flat screen TV, the seventh bedroom is located in a detached, two-storey, 950-square metre guesthouse.
Ideal for hosting a second family or teenagers who want a bit of privacy, it boasts a huge open bedroom that sleeps five people, a full kitchen, lounge room and one and half bathrooms.
