The Crown Prince of Sweden and Silvia Sommerlath met at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where the young German interpreter was acting as host to the Swedish Prince. As the future King would later explain, he and Sommerlath “clicked” immediately, their love blossomed and the Crown Prince announced his attention to marry on March 12, 1976.
The couple exchanged vows three months later on June 19, 1976 at Storkyrkan Cathedral in Stockholm. The young bride’s Christian Dior by Marc Bohan silk duchesse gown was reminiscent of other royal wedding dresses of the time: covered and modest, with a high neck and bell sleeves perfect for waving, as she arrived on the grand staircase of Storkyrkan. She paired it with a veil given to her by the Swedish royal family.
Rather fittingly, the wedding was preceded with a concert by ABBA, who performed as a fine tribute to the country’s future Queen.
