The best street style from Oaks Day 2019

With this year’s spring racing season nearing its close, racegoers at this year’s Oaks Day event took the carnival’s fast-approaching end as motivation to make major fashion moves.

Proceeding two previous key Melbourne Cup carnival days—Derby Day and Melbourne Cup itself—which each dictate dress codes that couldn’t be more polar, this particular race day saw all in attendance embracing looks that were a harmonious combination of the dress demands of the days that came before it, borrowing the adventurous inclinations and technicolour palettes offered by each of them, respectively.

And beyond the sartorial style showcased by those race regulars that came before them this season, Oaks Day attendees had the added benefit of an additional dress brief through the day’s second moniker of Ladies Day. The wardrobe requirement was accepted and clearly accomplished as evidenced by the stream of looks that crossed our gaze throughout the day.

Traversing the turf trackside at Flemington were looks that were femininity-fuelled, ethereal and, more often than not, pastel-hued.

Billowing tulle dresses, oversized bow details, gloves of all lengths, and naturally, floral prints as far as they eye could see, were featured in many of the day’s looks. Many of this racing season’s standout trends also featured in the form of elaborate headbands and playful hairclips, while strong suiting and pink, in all its possible iterations, were also spied on the day.

Our standout looks include Michelle Battersby’s paisley dream of a dress designed by Leo & Lin, the ultra-romantic hair look worn by Olympia Valance which featured fresh flowers and pearl detailing, and Kate Waterhouse’s playful Prada lip motif print dress.
