Hamel had been a referee in the top flight since the 2016/17, having overseen 136 Ligue 1 matches in total, including eight this season. He most recently took charge of Lille’s draw against Rennes on November 6, and was the VAR assistant in Paris Saint-Germain’s win over Auxerre this past Sunday. He also officiated in Ligue 2 a total of 85 times, including a game between Metz and Annecy for Matchday 7.

The Frenchman has also been a fourth official in a number of European encounters, having taken up the role for Real Madrid’s home win over Celtic this season, as well as a handful of Europa League and Conference League games over the past three seasons.
