Quel est le point commun entre Winston Churchill, les corgis, Lady Diana et Instagram ? Elizabeth II, bien sûr ! Même si la présence du réseau social dans cette liste a de quoi surprendre. Ce 7 mars 2019, la reine d’Angleterre a pourtant bel et bien publié son premier message sur Instagram.
La monarque de 92 ans a effectué une visite du Musée des Sciences de Londres ce jeudi pour partager un morceau d’Histoire sur le compte officiel de la famille royale : “J’ai été intriguée par la découverte d’une lettre des Archives royales, écrite en 1843 à mon arrière-arrière grand-père le prince Albert.” La reine poursuit alors son récit sur un certain Charles Babbage, connu comme étant un pionnier de l’informatique. “Dans la lettre, Babbage explique à la reine Victoria et au prince Albert son invention, le Moteur Analytique, à partir duquel les premiers programmes informatiques ont été créés.”
Today, as I visit the Science Museum I was interested to discover a letter from the Royal Archives, written in 1843 to my great-great-grandfather Prince Albert. Charles Babbage, credited as the world’s first computer pioneer, designed the “Difference Engine”, of which Prince Albert had the opportunity to see a prototype in July 1843. In the letter, Babbage told Queen Victoria and Prince Albert about his invention the “Analytical Engine” upon which the first computer programmes were created by Ada Lovelace, a daughter of Lord Byron. Today, I had the pleasure of learning about children’s computer coding initiatives and it seems fitting to me that I publish this Instagram post, at the Science Museum which has long championed technology, innovation and inspired the next generation of inventors.
