The 9 new faces to know on The Crown season 3

has a habit of catapulting its cast members to superstardom. Just take Claire Foy, who was relatively unknown outside of the UK prior to her starring role on Netflix’s royal hit (three years on, she’s a household name with both an Emmy and Golden Globe to show for it). This month, the drama returns for its third season with a brand new troop of actors. From recent Oscar winners to rising stars, presents the nine names to know ahead of the premiere. 

Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II
Lauded for her tragicomic turn as Queen Anne in – which earned her a Bafta, Golden Globe and Oscar earlier this year – Colman now takes on the role of the current monarch. She’s a TV veteran, having appeared on and, most recently, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Emmy-winning Meanwhile, her big-screen credits include Paddy Considine’s, Yorgos Lanthimos’s and Phyllida Lloyd’s , in which she played the prime minister’s daughter Carol Thatcher, alongside Meryl Streep.

Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip
The British actor, who co-starred with Colman in , succeeds Matt Smith as the Duke of Edinburgh. He’s best known for his involvement in two of HBO’s sweeping epics: as Brutus in the lavish series and Edmure Tully across three seasons of . In 2016, he was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his dual roles of Frank and Jonathan Randall in the historical drama . With his latest part, more awards recognition is expected to follow.     

Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret
Since winning hearts as Lucy Honeychurch in , the twice Oscar-nominated actress has become a national treasure. Her body of work encompasses cult classics (), commercial behemoths (the franchise) and collaborations with Tim Burton (, , ). She’s no stranger to playing royalty either – in , she cut a formidable figure as the future Queen Mother Who better, then, to take over from Vanessa Kirby as the rebellious and charismatic Princess Margaret?

Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon
fans will recognise the series’ new Antony Armstrong-Jones as Adam Galloway, the photographer who has an ill-fated affair with Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood. Also a celebrated stage actor, Daniels won a Laurence Olivier Award in 2001 for his performance in Arthur Miller’s , and received a Tony nomination in 2008 for .

Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles
His breakout performance in – a tender love story that plays out against the windswept Yorkshire moors – brought O’Connor critical acclaim and a nomination for Bafta’s EE Rising Star Award in 2018. The actor previously starred in ITV’s much-loved period drama , but joining as the future Prince of Wales is surely a ticket to global stardom.

Erin Doherty as Princess Anne
The BBC’s and both feature the fresh-faced Doherty (the cast of the latter also includes Colman as Madame Thénardier and O’Connor as Marius Pontmercy). Taking the reins from Lyla Barrett-Rye, she’s set to play the Queen’s adolescent daughter.

Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother
With a career spanning over four decades, Bailey has worked extensively in the theatre and on TV shows including and . Her partner Mike Leigh directed her in , and , while her most recent credits range from the spy thriller to Nicholas Hytner’s As the steely Queen Mother, she’s a fitting heir to Victoria Hamilton.

Jason Watkins as Harold Wilson
Hapless politicians are something of a specialty for Watkins – he played Liberal MP Lord Hooson in last year’s . Season three sees him take on the role of the Labour prime minister during his two terms in office. Up next in season four? Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.

Emerald Fennell as Camilla Shand
Her long-running role as Patsy on brought Fennell fame, but the British actress, author and screenwriter certainly hasn’t let that define her. She’s worked with Glenn Close on , landed a part in Joe Wright’s and played Vanessa Bell in the Bloomsbury romance In 2018, she was also chosen by Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the new head writer for the second season of Being cast as Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, is a major coup, but Fennell will continue working behind the camera, too: her feature-length directorial debut, a thriller starring Carey Mulligan and Laverne Cox, is due to be released in 2020.
