Ask any fragrance buff and they’ll tell you the same thing: fragrance is personal. For model, influencer and Yves Saint Laurent Beauty ambassador, Brooke Hogan, a spritz of scent can instantly transport her to a moment in time, and for this reason, the Melbourne-based beauty has a wardrobe of fragrances on high rotation. On release of YSL’s newest blockbuster scent, Libre, Hogan reflects on her favourite smells (the beach and rain), her grandmother’s go-to scent and the perks of a birthday fragrance.

Before you started working with YSL, what did the brand represent to you?
“Through my childhood years and still to this day, my Grandma wore YSL Opium perfume. I remember it was such a special bottle, so beautiful that she kept it on display in her room. I remember thinking of YSL as an extremely luxury, elegant and feminine brand. Fast forward a few years and I was doting over handbags and couture and then eventually I purchased my very first YSL piece on a special holiday to NYC with my mum in 2015. Now [in my] late twenties, I see YSL as my go-to for fashion, accessories, fragrance and make-up. YSL holds some very special memories for me from early childhood until now.”

What is the best piece of beauty advice you’ve learnt from a make-up artist?
“To avoid concealer creasing under your eye, warm the concealer up with your (clean) fingers and then apply by gently dabbing it into your skin with your ring finger. Oh, and always use a lash curler!”

What’s your beauty regimen for a day off?
“The simpler the better if you ask me. My hair is always tied back and off my face, my skin is clean and loaded with serums for protection and hydration. If I am not feeling great and my skin needs a pick me up, a little bit of tinted moisturiser mixed in with my serum does the trick. I won’t leave the house without a spritz of perfume; my go-to at the moment is obviously, YSL Libre.”

What was the first fragrance you owned?
“My mum bought me Curious by Britney Spears when I was a teen but my first purchase was Gucci Rush.”

Are there any smells that you’re particularly really drawn to?
“I like a combination of citrus and florals scents that aren’t overly feminine for the day time and more of a woody, sophisticated fragrance for the evening. I am drawn to scents that remind me of a certain person or memory.”

What’s the most nostalgic smell for you?
“I get nostalgia from many scents, the smell of the beach and the smell of fresh rain on the road. In terms of fragrance, my partner’s cologne he wore when we first met.”

Do you change your fragrance often?
“I usually rotate between two fragrances, one for day and one for evening until the bottles are finished. I do like to have certain fragrances only for special occasions- I have a particular fragrance I only wear for weddings and birthdays so that scent reminds me of love, celebration and happiness. I often buy bottles more than once.”
