The best street style from the Kaws opening night at the National Gallery of Victoria

The style set flocked to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne on September 19 to mark the opening of the hotly-anticipated Kaws: Companionship in the age of loneliness exhibition. Celebrating the works of Brian Donnelly, better known as Kaws, the exhibition explores a wide range of his works, including but not limited to sculpture, paintings and collaborations with other artists and brands. To those in the know, Kaws has established himself as one of the brightest and most exciting working artists in the world today, making this exhibition one of the most compelling on the Australian art calendar for 2019.

By bridging the gap between fashion and art, high and low, mainstream and modern, Kaws has gained an incredible digital following (amassing an audience of 2.4 million on Instagram) as well as entrée into some of the most prominent galleries in the world, showing in the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and the Yuz Museum Shanghai (to name a few).

And, mimicking the injection of humour and bold use of colour deployed in his works, art enthusiasts and fashion fans alike gathered at the National Gallery of Victoria in outfits that signaled that they came dressed for the occasion. From ironic Balenciaga hoodies to bodysuits by playful up-and-coming designer Marine Serre, guests at last night’s opening affair  did not disappoint in matters of fashion.

Photographer Liz Sunshine was on the ground to capture the highlights of last night’s street style and witness the intersections between life, art and fashion first-hand. Below, peruse the best dressed attendees according to Vogue.
