Last night, the whole of Australia watched on as 31-year-old astrophysicist Matt Agnew chose 28-year-old chemical engineer Chelsie McLeod as the winner of The Bachelor Australia’s drama-filled seventh season.

Just prior to announcing it was the ever so endearing Chelsie who had won his heart, Matt had to break it to 23-year-old Queenslander Abbie Chatfield that she was not the woman he wanted to be with.
“I absolutely didn’t see it coming at all, it was such a shock,” the contestant told Vogue, sharing that up until that moment, she had trusted all that Matt had said to her and was confident in their connection. “I was literally blind-sided,” she added.
If you tuned into the finale last night, then you’re well aware that following her eviction, Abbie told the producers that she wasn’t sure she had even ever loved Matt. When given the chance, Vogue quizzed Abbie on the truth behind her feelings for the bachelor.
“I definitely was in love with Matt,” she admitted. “I was just in absolute shock. I didn’t feel anything. I was completely numb in that car. I don’t remember a lot of it. Even when we went back to the hotel room, I don’t remember it. I literally was in shock,” she said of her initial reaction to the rejection.
“It’s obviously been really difficult watching it last night. It’s been rough, but I think I can start healing now,” Abbie confessed, adding that while she hasn’t been in contact with Matt, she has become good friends with Chelsie.
“I think they are really happy together,” she told Vogue. “Chelsie and I haven’t really spoken about it specifically but from what I’ve heard, they seem really happy. So that’s good, I want them to get to be happy together.”
While she admits that she has had trouble moving on from what was a rather public break up, given that as she puts it, “everywhere I look there’s Matt,” the Queenslander says: “it’s actually helping me seeing Matt and Chelsie together, because I know they’re so happy.”
“I’m not completely in love with Matt anymore, that would be ridiculous,” she added. “But I still have feelings for him and I think I just need to start getting over it now.” As for how she plans on doing so? The contestant shares she’s ready to start dating again.
Addressing the rumour that she wasn’t on the show for the right reasons, Abbie tells Vogue: “It’s a cliche on every season. I think it’s a throwaway thing to say about someone that maybe the girls just don’t like.”
“The only regret that I have would be some things that I said about Elly in some interviews when I was really upset with her after she told Matt that she didn’t think I was there for the right reasons,” Abbie shared when quizzed on whether she’d go about anything differently, if given the chance.
“Elly and I have had a few conversations actually and we’re completely fine,” she added when asked whether they’d been in touch since filming wrapped. “We’re actually better then fine. I would say we’re friends.”
