5 high fashion headwear trends to inspire your spring racing outfit

As spring racing season fast approaches, it’s time to consider headwear: big and bold, or understated and elegant. Couture shows from earlier in the year reminded us of the power of the classics: netted berets (and netting in general) created a dark but sophisticated mood at Christian Dior, whilst feather and netting combinations were reimagined at Maison Margiela. Ready-to-wear spring/summer 2020 collections also provided a wealth of inspiration: from jungle-inspired headscarves at Dolce & Gabbana and Missoni, to block-brights and enduring flower power at Marc Jacobs. The diamonds and pearls trend remained strong after making an appearance in headband form at Ralph & Russo, later finding its way onto the runway in headpieces at Khaite. If you’re too shy to commit to anything too bold, have a play with textures as exemplified by the delicate straw at Dior, shimmering turbans at Saint Laurent, or crochet at Marc Jacobs.

The classics
Derby Day calls for classic black and white attire. If you prefer to stick to the iconic feather and netting combination, look no further than Dior’s netted berets or Maison Margiela’s intricate combinations. Over-the-top broad brimmed hats also featured at Yohji Yamamoto’s ready-to-wear spring/summer 2020 collection, providing stylish shade for Derby Day.

Bold headscarves

Headscarves are here to stay, with Dolce & Gabbana’s tropical-bright silks providing the perfect touch of colour. Or take a cue from Missoni and have fun with layering. Either way, think bold patterns and deep jungle tones to complete your relaxed updo for Stakes Day.

Brights and florals
Bigger is always better, especially come Melbourne Cup Day when the bold and beautiful take center stage. Look no further than Marc Jacobs’s take on the floppy hat trend in vibrant block colours, laced with crochet detail, or Issey Miyake’s fun layered-like top hats. If these prove more excessive than practical, Dolce & Gabbana also previewed simple floral touches – flowers sprinkled through voluminous curls or a daisy popped behind the ear.

Diamonds and pearls
The trend of diamond encrusted headbands seen at Ralph & Russo earlier this year, and pearl-laden hairclips filling your Instagram feed have had an uplift on the runways of the ready-to-wear spring/summer 2020 collections. Think dripping headpieces as seen at Khaite or Andrew GN’s take on pearl encrusted scrunchies and even pearl entwined hair styles. A dainty yet eye catching touch, pearls will perfect your Oaks Day outfit.

Texture
Textured headwear serves as a unique addition to a simple outfit, and is definitely on trend this season. The quintessential garden party piece, Dior’s delicately woven, short-brimmed garden hats came in both black and cream colourways, providing a versatile option for either Stakes Day or Derby Day. The headscarves and turban trends continued at Saint Laurent, but this time shimmering textured fabrics dominated the runway, another subtle but effective option for Derby Day. Texture also found its way to Marc Jacobs’s runway in crochet flowers, looking cute tucked into the front of a bun.
